Options for students include Georgia State University, which offers a dance degree, and dance students can apprentice at the Atlanta Ballet. Theatre majors can get undergraduate and postgraduate acting degrees at GSU as well as Emory University.
The labor market for Atlanta is extraordinarily favorable for performing artists through 2010. Dancers are expected to experience a 35% increase in the number of full-time positions while actors and musicians are expected to experience 43% and 40% growth, respectively. It is wise to put these numbers into context, however, before packing your suitcase. The number of dancing positions, for example, is expected to rise 35% -- but in real terms, this means an increase of 24 positions (plus back-filling any positions that are vacated) through all dancing disciplines. The good news is, however, that in a city with such a varied and lively arts scene, there should be plenty of freelance work available.
